Philips 40PFL7605H/05 Review

The Philips 40PFL7605H/05 offers 1080P LED Edge light TV for  relatively low cost in this product price range. Philips have created a very attractive TV with a number of innovative features which really do go a long way when viewing the TV.

The set itself is a very good looking TV from the German company and is also very slim at only 30mm in depth. Philips has given the TV a single stem stand and a silver bezel, which is quite slim and we couldn’t say we weren’t impressed with the Philips 40PFL7605H/05.

Philips 40PFL7605H/05 Connection

The TV is well connected and comes with 4HDMI, a USB, SD slot and a number of other connections – many of which are at the side for easy access. The TV also comes with VGA, composite connections, Scart and most others you can think of for connecting all your older and newer equipment. The TV also has Freeview, but no high definition version of this feature, which we feel would have helped its desirability no end. However it still offers a very worthy set for most and these HD boxes can be picked up for pittance nowadays – so it’s not of significant consequence.

The set also comes with DLNA, for streaming through a Wi-Fi network from your PC and it is also net ready, though doesn’t have an open browser, or support all video types from the net which can be a little irritating. The Internet layout though looks good, is logical and easy to use. Philips obviously gave this some thought and working it with the attractive remote is a dream.

Philips 40PFL7605H/05 Picture Quality

Image wise the TV is also a great prospect and in standard definition looks good. The colours are bright and punchy and it also offers good contrast and black levels and doesn’t suffer from greys and bland whites – it’s a sharp and ready set. It has a processor that runs at 100Hz and we found it to be pretty decent as regards movement. One problem though is with the Natural Motion System which isn’t great and can’t be switched on or off at will – an irritation.

Philips 40PFL7605H/05 Settings

In fact this settings area is one of the weakest points of the Philips 40PFL7605H/05. The TV has a lot of settings, but optimising them is an irritation and the slightest tweak can really put the images off. On the upside innovative features such as the Ambilight Spectra is great. This is one of the most innovative features we’ve seen on a TV recently and projects certain colours out of the side of the screen onto walls to make the whole experience more engrossing and the screen seem larger. For example if watching an undersea programme where the dominant colour is bue, it would be that colour that is projected on the walls. In a movie where explosions took place it would be red and orange during the fireworks – it’s innovative and more importantly a positive feature.

High definition levels look great and the TV displays BluRay nicely. We enjoyed this source and would definitely recommend the TV for movie lovers. Gaming lag on the TV is quite average, though nothing to write home about and the 2x10W speakers are pretty okay, though as usual a sound system doesn’t go amiss.

As a TV set the Philips is superb, however for some the lack of Freeview HD and a few other misses take away from it some.

philips TV 37 INCH

Philips 37PFL8605H/12 Review

Philips have a quite good history of creating good, but underrated TVs and we wonder will the Philips 37PFL8605H/12 continue in that vein? It is a 37 inch LED edge light TV with Full HD of 1080p – meaning it has the very top of the range potential for a picture in terms of pixilation.

Like most of the Philips range of TVs, it is a slim set that looks great on the stand and better on the wall. It has a distinctive look from other TVs and Philip has to be applauded for its nice design. We did find it was somewhat creaky though when we lifted it, which does ask questions over the build quality. However, we do like the look of it.

Philips 37PFL8605H/12 Connectivity

The TV is a well connected one for its price range and Philips have added the premium range 4xHDMI ports for connection of  other mediums such as BluRay and gaming consoles as well as VGA ports for connecting PC’s, composite, audio and a range of other ports. The Philips 37PFL8605H/12 also has a USB port and it is possible to play movies back on it. It supports most file types and though the interface isn’t inspiring it’s clear and concise and certainly does the job. Most of the connections are on the side, with some on the back, meaning there are no issues as regards the TV’s connection when hung up.

Philips 37PFL8605H/12 Net TV

Philips have included their NetTV feature with the set, which is nice and easy to use, though doesn’t offer completley free browsing and focuses on an apps service. Saying that most players are supported and you can watch most of the UK catch up services, YouTube and a whole host of others. There are also social media options and some other colourful additions. It is also possible to play directly from a PC via DLNA and this is certainly a nice feature for watching home footage and images.

Like many of its bigger brothers the Philips 37PFL8605H/12 gets the ambilight treatment. This is an innovative concept which projects the dominating colours of a scene out of the side of the TV onto the surrounding walls to create an atmospheric effect which is also prone to making the TV screen seem larger. This is a smart and also effective piece of technology that adds to the experience when watching certain forms of viewing such as movies or documentaries.

Philips 37PFL8605H/12 Pixel HD Engine

The Philips 37PFL8605H/12 also has the Pixel HD engine which simulates a 200Hz refresh rate and ensures the TV runs very smoothly. This refresh rate is exemplary and we found that watching heavy footage on the TV was no hindrance to the set and there was little ghosting. The TV also comes with a range of features for tuning, however, this often leads to users losing the optimum setting as it is quite pernickety – though when you get it right it is worth it.

The TV doesn’t suffer from much lag and we must be honest and say contrasts and black levels were good for an edge light TV, though not as good as the best. We found SD to be good from the Freeview box and HD also was better than average and we really enjoyed movies on the TV.

Gaming lag is below average, though is not a significant handicap and casual gamers won’t mind so much. Sound is just about average as well and the addition of a surround sound system is a good idea.

Philips has created a lovely TV with the Philips 37PFL8605H/12, though there are a few problems as regards lag and build issues, it is a great TV, which has some nice innovative features and most importantly produces great images .
