Sony KDL32EX703U Review

Slim edge light sets are the order of the day, with their aesthetics being appreciated by most, though no and again the images produced by them can be a little lacklustre. The Sony KDL32EX703U is a slim TV from its side profile, however its thick glass bezel around the edge of the screen goes against these super-slim values. Frankly the Sony KDL32EX703U looks a little cheap and the brushed steel plastic strip and the cheap looking stand do it no favours, though it feels solid and secure it doesn’t in fact look it.

Sony has a penchant for plenty of connections and the TV doesn’t disappoint and comes with 4x HDMI ports, component, VGA, 2 Scarts, a LAN port for the Internet and a built in Freeview HD tuner. The set also comes with a USB input, with a number of these slots on the side for easy access when the TV is hung up.

Sony KDL32EX703U Xross Media Bar

The set uses the Xross Media Bar, which we found to be quite usable, though the company has placed some items we find in familiar places in strange places we didn’t expect. Overall there is a smorgasbord of settings, which can be a bit confusing when you try to figure them all out. There are also a number of modes to simplify proceedings, of which the game mode is most important for gamers.

The TV can be setup to a very good degree and you can get quite accurate looking colours, which are certainly quite judder free from the TV with a little bit of work. The Internet option in the set is also quite nicely done and Sony has produced quite an intuitive browsing system with this TV.

Sony KDL32EX703U Images

The TV is an edge light one and so we don’t expect black levels of the old CCFL or the fully backlight standard. The Sony does well though an blacks are quite deep, though lack a little now and again. Contrast was also quite good on the set and we would definitely put it above the middle of its class in this area. As regards motion blur or ghosting the TV, the TV does quite well and with a bit of configuration the TV looks quite realistic, without much processing which hampers the images.

Sony KDL32EX703U Great HD

HD on the TV is excellent and BluRay’s looked great, true and without and processing and no unwanted sharpening. Colours looked good and the TV is recommended for HD viewing. Standard definition was a little lacklustre and the Sony does a decent enough job, but couldn’t be commended for its noise reduction, though couldn’t be harshly criticised wither – though this would not be a great TV for those watching all films in SD.

Sony’s are renowned for their poor gaming pedigree, with usually high lag from gaming input. Funny considering they make the Playstation. However the Sony KDL EX703 has a lower than average incidence of lag and so is a superior model to most Sony’s.

Overall the Sony is quite good and better than most slim LCD screened TVs, though there are some lacking areas such as SD up scaling and the menu set up.

Sony Bravia KDL46EX703U Review

Sony have been up and around the top of the television market for a long time now and have certainly learned a thing or two. The Sony Bravia
KDL46EX703U is their latest attempt at a great edge light TV with a bundle of features included. The new Sony is a slim set, though does seem a little bit thicker than minute judging from its sizeable top bezel.

The set is attractive, aside from the silver edge which will divide many people’s idea of whether the Sony is a looker or not.

Sony Bravia KDL46EX703U Connectivity

Sony have given the TV plenty of connectivity and unlike other manufacturers have thought where is best to place the connections., With a pretty even amount between the back and the side of the TV. Of those the TV has 4 HDMI ports, a VGA, 2 Scarts, composite, audio and a number of others, as well as a USB port for playback of files.

Sony has also included a Freeview HD tuner with the TV which will please many and allows users to get the full 1080p out of the set at all times – which is always visually pleasing. The TV also comes with W-Fi and so Internet access, so giving access to a number of online catch-up services and Internet channels on the TV.

Sony Bravia KDL46EX703U Xross Media

Sony uses its Xross media bar for settings and we found no problems using it and would consider it a well thought out settings bar with a intuitive interface and an all round logical appeal. The settings can be moved to really do about anything from processing to contrasting, however colour settings are a little limited, which may be a hindrance to some users.

Sony Bravia KDL46EX703U Bravia 3

The TV offers excellent picture and the set is an attractive one to watch. For an edge light TV it offers very nice blacks that really are quite impressive. It is also a great TV as regards contrast. Motion blur is also dealt with quite well and the TV doesn’t seem to over process the picture allowing for realistic images, this is thanks to the excellent Bravia 3 Engine. The 100Hz refresh rate makes it ideal for sports and fast moving images.

The sets strongest point is its HD imagery, which to be honest looks fantastic. It looks clear, without any sort of alteration and no unnecessary sharpening. Colours looked realistic and saturation was very good. Standard definition let the TV down however and it just seemed a little poorly in this area. Noise reduction isn’t very evident and ironically it is the weakest part of the TV considering the quality of the HD .

Sony Bravia KDL46EX703U  - Good for Gaming

Gaming on the TV is quite good and above average with a 31ms delay. This brings the TV up in our estimations and surprised us as Sony usually make poor TVs as regards gaming lag. Audio on the TV wasn’t amazing, but no worse than the average for a TV such as this.

Overall it is a great TV for HD, looks okay, but is well built, though lacks in SD up scaling which for some will really have a large effect.
